In January 2014, Miami University's Greek Life provided me with a great opportunity to travel to a completely different part of the country, with fellow members from Tri-Council in order to fulfill a service project, in the beautiful city of New Orleans, Louisiana during "J-term".
On this trip, I received a well rounded experience that was only possible through the Immersion of the AFLV program.
Within this project, we received many valuable opportunities to help give back to the local community by conducting solid service, in order to make positive changes. In the beginning of our service we Performed Random Acts of Kindness in which we provided food and water to the less fortunate as well as cleaned up the French Quarter. In addition, we helped students at the APEX community center by serving as positive role models to the inner city youth as college students that believed in them, and answered various questions that sparked their curiosity. We even got the opportunity to play a couple games of basketball, but our overall mission was to motivate, and remind those kids that they TOO,can succeed!
Lastly, we assisted teachers at a local Charter school by setting up their supplies and organizing their materials so that the staff could be as prepared as possible for the upcoming week, another kind gesture to assist those that are already busy creating brighter futures. Whether, touring the French Quarter or visiting the once ravaged and recovering areas from Hurricane Katrina, this trip truly opened my eyes for I realized that no task is too small, and making change goes a long way.
